PAUL & BERNIE’S SECOND PAIR’S VICTORY IN BOURNMOUTH

Readings Paul Sainsbury and Bernie McCluskey lifted the British Open Pairs title for the second time as they defeated Oxford pair Ray Sturgess and Keith Sheard in the final, after two days of absorbing bar Billiards at the Queens Hotel.

70 pairs started out in the quest for the title, losing 1st and 2nd round pairs going into the Queens Hotel Plate. No major shocks from this round Peter Sainsbury from Kent with 12,140 break and Berkshire’s Dave Alder put out Sussex pair Richard Dewdney and Gareth Lloyd. A.E.B.B.A. President Eric Hill Dorset and Berkshire’s Phil Hawkins lost by 80 points to the Oxfordshire pairing of Gary Johnson and Leon Beer.

Jersey pair Graham Bisson and Harry Barbet lost also lost out in this round, former winners Pete Farrelly and Steve Biggs moved into the next round, Kent’s Chris Saville teamed up with his former Kent team mate again, now playing as the Greek Champion Les Green they moved forward to the next round. Former winners Berkshire’s Bill Trinder and Mark Sawyer lost out to Sussex pair Sue Galleymore and Stuart Mepham while Paul and Jane Wood Oxfordshire held a 7,000 lead going into the second leg against Buckinghamshires Ernie Jordan and John Burrows but John hit back with a 12,570 break for victory.

The third round saw Johnson and Beer beating All England Chairman Keith Lewendon and Paul Yeo Berkshire, biggest shock in the third round was former winners Kevin Tunstall and Tony Martin Oxfordshire leading the first leg by 11,000 going out to Pete Phillips and Steven Sheard 15,270 break in the second leg for victory. Green and Saville made it into the next round as did the Oxfordshire pairing of Sam Goddard and Derek Payne, Galleymore and Mepham lost a close game to Ian Street Sussex and Lorin Clough Warwickshire?.

Jordan and Burrows put out the strong pair of Paul Wing Hampshire and Berkshires Tony Walsh 11,280 to 13,880.

Round 4 saw Kevin and Bella Stoner beating another Sussex pair of Michelle Baden and Doug Dawson, Northants Jim and Matthew Thomson also moved on as did Saville and Green against Phillips and Sheard. Two 7,000 breaks saw Sturgess and Sheard going through while McCluskey and Sainsbury had a 15,000 victory against Farrelly and Biggs, a slip up from John Burrows was the downfall for him and his partner Ernie Jordan as Payne and Goddard reached the next round, as did Johnson and Beer, Street and Clough also reached the next stage.

Sunday saw the Quarter Finals taking place Johnson and Beer reached the Semi’s beating the Stoner’s while McCluskey and Sainsbury just edged out Thomson and Thomson in a low scoring affair, with Keith sheards 21,020 break enough to put out Saville and Green. The elder statesman of Payne and Goddard put an end to Street and Clough.

The Semi Finals saw McCluskey and Sainsbury beating Johnson and Beer and Sturgess and Sheard against Payne and Goddard winning all in three legs. The final saw Sheard winning the first leg with a 9,630 after Sainsbury broke down early on, McCluskey levelled the score with a 9,440 and the third leg saw McCluskey in good form as he hit 17,480 to put his side in command going into the forth leg. Sturgess broke down early and with the score standing at 5,290 to Sainsbury and McCluskey and 1,770 to Sturgess and Sheard the game was conceded.

 

The Queens Hotel Plate started on Saturday afternoon for the 1st and 2nd losing players hoping to make a better start than the mornings endeavour’s. So such luck for the Jersey pairing of Bisson and Barbet as they lost out to Berkshires Ron and Eileen Britton, Who also won first prize in the raffle. Hill and Hawkins had to come from behind to beat Buckinghamshires Ray Hussey and Terry Isard by 3,000.

Sunday saw the 3rd round of the plate with no major shocks taking place. Alan Oliver and Ian Moss Oxfordshire had to restart the second leg against Cambridgeshire’s Keith MacDonald and Phil Buckle after MacDonald played out turn. The quarter finals saw Hill and Hawkins going through, Berkshires Brian Dawkins and Mike Gibbons put out Sussex pair Nigel Senior and Richard Wooton by 90 points, Oliver and Moss moved on as they beat Dave Mitchell and Bill Gosling Berkshire, the final pair into the semi finals was Sussex pair Rick Dewdney and Gareth Lloyd who beat Oxfordshire ‘s Jane and Paul Wood.

Hill and Hawkins 16,390 beat Dawkins and Gibbons while a close game saw Dewdnwy and Lloyd beating Oliver and Moss 7,630 to 8,220.

The Final saw Hill and Hawkins 14,000 up from the first leg  again in command in the second leg leading with 5,000 the game was conceded.
